Over the years, the Saltsjöbaden workshops have formed a forum for informal discussions on current air pollution issues and, the outcomes from these have contributed to setting the agenda for the future. The seventh meeting, which was held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the period of 13-15 March 2023, discussed urgent issues and put forward a number of recommendations for global, regional and national collaboration.
Back-to-back with Saltsjöbaden VII, the first meeting of the Forum for International Cooperation on Air Pollution (FICAP). This forum aims to encourage international exchange and mutual learning, and to facilitate the sharing of science, technical and policy expertise regarding air pollution. The outcome from the FICAP forum is also included in the Saltsjöbaden report.
Aleksandar Macura participated in the the session on how to “Attain good air quality in airsheds at risk” which was co-chaired by Tomas Marques from UNEP Geneva and Mrs. Katja Asmussen from Denmark’s Ministry of Environment. The objective of this session was to discuss and come with recommendations on how to develop air quality governance methodologies in airsheds at risk. The discussion centred around the need to improve air quality, data availability and low-cost solutions to bridge economic barriers. Also around policy areas closely linked to air protection, including energy, transport, and future planning of cities, where air quality may be a tool to drive change. The session explored examples and experience from around the world, with speakers from low and middle and high-income countries.
The Forum for International Cooperation on Air Pollution (FICAP) was on 16th March 2023. Macura gave his contribution to session 2: ‘No-regret’ actions for improving air quality”. Moderator of the session was John Salter MBE, Head of International Air Quality and Industrial Emissions, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
